ENTERPRISE SALES / FOUNDER FIELD NOTES
Your enterprise demo goes well. The buyer asks for a pilot. Weeks later, your team is still answering technical questions, and nobody has agreed on what would justify a purchase. For a founder, that gap consumes engineering time, delays cash, and makes the sales forecast harder to trust.
Palantir's Q3 2024 results presentation is useful because it puts evidence around that gap: how a customer moves toward a contract, what operational value looks like, and whether commercial activity appears in the numbers. The founder's problem we will study is specific: how do you make a complex product credible enough for an enterprise buying decision?
What this resource is. This is an investor business update, presented alongside results released on November 4, 2024, for the quarter ended September 30. It is not a seed fundraising deck or a customer proposal. Palantir provides software platforms for commercial and government organizations; AIP, its Artificial Intelligence Platform, connects AI capabilities with operational work. [1, 2, 5]
Why late 2024 matters. On July 29, Gartner predicted that at least 30% of generative AI projects would be abandoned after proof of concept by the end of 2025, citing issues including costs and unclear business value. That was a forecast made in 2024, not a measured failure rate. It captures the concern surrounding enterprise AI: could experimentation justify ongoing spending? [3]
Palantir also entered the S&P 500 on September 23, 2024. Its November presentation therefore combined a new institutional milestone with a case for commercial expansion. The reported quarter generated approximately $726 million in revenue, up 30% year over year. Those are historical revenues, not investment raised. [1, 2, 4]
Our reading focuses on the work the slides perform. Their sequence does not prove that this presentation caused sales, or that Palantir's process will transfer unchanged to a smaller company. It does give founders a concrete way to examine the evidence missing from their own sales story.
Give the pilot a commercial destination

The slide follows three unnamed customers. A bottled-water manufacturer reached a seven-figure ACV deal 50 days after an initial bootcamp. An agriculture software provider did so in under two months. A healthcare provider moved from inbound interest to a seven-figure ACV deal in three months. [1, p. 4]
What the slide does. It places a commercial outcome beside a visible sequence of steps. The reader can see where an initial engagement led, how long it took, and where expansion remained under discussion. Three parallel columns make the paths easy to compare.
ACV means annual contract value. Palantir defines its closed ACV using contract value and contract duration, with assumptions about options and termination. A seven-figure ACV contract is not the same thing as $1 million of cash collected immediately. The slide's footnote matters. [1, p. 4]
For your company. Before starting another pilot, agree on the workflow being tested, its baseline, the buyer who owns the outcome, and the evidence needed for a purchasing decision. Put the decision date on the same page as the technical scope. That gives your team a way to distinguish progress toward revenue from another request for unpaid development.
These are selected success stories. The deck does not supply the full pilot cohort, unsuccessful engagements, or median conversion time. Use the slide as a model for explaining a sales path; do not use its timelines as a forecast for your startup.
